Florida Nears Fluoride Ban in Tap Water—Nationwide Impact Looms

United States: The state of Florida has approved new legislation that prepares the state to remove fluoride from all public drinking water supplies.

The state legislation advances to Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, who will decide on its enactment.

More about the news

The Florida legislature aims to follow Utah as the second state to prohibit public water supply fluoride application. Governor DeSantis describes water fluoridation as a matter of forced chemical treatment.

His office declined to provide information about whether Governor DeSantis will support the measure.

Fluoride Debate Reignites Health concerns

The addition of minimal fluoride amounts to water supplies operated by US water authorities for decades has led experts to determine it has stopped many thousands of cavities from forming.

The Florida House of Representatives, under Republican leadership, approved this bill during their Tuesday session within their sweeping farm legislation.

Previous to this, the Senate had already approved the ban in April. The legislation prevents water supply additives through an unspecified mention of “water quality additives.”

Prior to his electoral success, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. expressed to the White House administration that he wanted to prohibit fluoride from water supplies by classifying it as “industrial waste.”

Misinformation Fuels Anti-Fluoride Push

Kennedy supports various incorrect theories about wellness and health and attributes multiple diseases, including arthritis, bone fractures and bone cancer, IQ reduction, neurodevelopmental conditions, and thyroid diseases, to water fluoridation.

The administration of fluoride under proper control represents a crucial technique to stop dental problems while supporting safe mineral interaction.

Public water fluoridation stands among the top innovations of the twentieth century for public health, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The HHS leadership directed the CDC to establish an independent evaluation team of healthcare professionals for a study on fluoride in drinking water and its potential health risks to the public.
