United States: Department of health has reported that eleven people have been treated with mpox. These individuals aged between 20 to 50 lives in the counties of Fairfield, New Haven, New London and Hartford. Fortunately, most of these patients have not required hospitalization according to the department’s statement. 

Historical Context and Current Situation 

Comparatively, to the current year there are four cases of mpox were diagnosed in Connecticut in 2023. Last year there has been significantly higher number with nearly 145 cases. Even with this intensity of the cases around it is essential to note that there has been no death associated or linked with it. 

Manisha Juthani who is the managing director or Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Public Health, focuses that the situation has improved due to the availability of the mpox vaccine and increased public awareness.

 “We are in a far different place than we were in 2022,” she stated. Dr. Juthani also explained that mpox spreads through close, prolonged contact with an infected person. This can include contact with skin lesions, bodily fluids, shared clothing or materials, and inhaling respiratory droplets during face-to-face interactions. 

Who Is Most at Risk? 

Health officials have pointed out that anyone can contract and spread mpox. However, the current cases in Connecticut primarily involve gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men, along with their sexual partners and also those who have multiple or anonymous sexual partners are at a higher risk of mpox exposure which is highlighted by the health department. 

Vaccination Recommendations and Coverage 

To stop the spread of mpox, health officials strongly recommending the vaccination for those who are at risk. The vaccine consists of two doses to provide maximum protection.  

Even after the recommendations, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that only one in threat-risk residents in Connecticut have received both doses of the vaccine. 

Dr. Juthani’s information underscores the vitality of continued vigilance and vaccination efforts. With greater awareness and vaccination, the state focuses to keep mpox cases under control and protect its people from further dangerous. 

In conclusion, though the number of mpox cases in has seen intermittency over the years, the availability of vaccines and increased public awareness are important factors in managing and reducing the impact of this disease and the health officials continue to advocate for the vaccination, especially among high-risk groups, to make sure  the safety and well-being of all residents.
